Thank you Home Acres Reformed Church

Home Acres Reformed Church took a break between Sunday school series to prepare snacks for the kids at The Dock.  After the Worship service, the congregation made 150 bags of homemade trail mix, adding a written blessing to each bag.  On Thursday, March 8, a dozen people brought them to The Dock and added the snacks to the lunch bags from Kid’s Food

Combined Choirs

On Saturday, March 10, the community of Wyoming was blessed with four local choirs for a free concert at Kelloggsville High School Auditorium to support The Dock Ministries.  Each choir sang a set of songs and for the grand finale, the choirs combined for several songs, including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus.  A free will offering was taken and $1793.00 was raised for daily running expenses.
Thank you to all who participated in the evening; Wayne Ondersma from The Dock for leading the evening in prayer, Dr Mark Taylor director of the Metropolitan, Sean Galloway, director of the Kelloggsville High School Choir;  Ron Rogers, director of the King’s Choraliers; and George Fennema, director of the Heritage Singing Men. Thank you to Morris Bledso for his solo and for the people behind the scenes; those who ran sound, lights, those who set up the stage for the evening and the ushers.  This incredible evening would not have been possible without each of you.

Loving Kid’s Generously Fund Raising Supper

Sonya Wentzel, Special Speaker

THE SECOND ANNUAL LOVING KIDS GENEROUSLY FUNDRAISING DINNER was held on February 23 at Faith Community Church. We had 16 sponsored tables filled to almost capacity and were blessed with a great meal by the Faith Community Catering Committee. Our keynote speaker was Sonya Wentzel, a woman who was saved by God’s grace, after a childhood of great pain and difficulty. Sonya is a Monday volunteer at The DOCK and because of her painful past, is able to see into the hearts of many hurting DOCK kids and reach them with a unique heartfelt empathy. Sonya moved the audience to action by explaining the difficulties many of these kids endure and charging involvement in this vital ministry through prayer, financial support and volunteering. Ken Wenger presented the urgent need for a new roof, which will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000, which is on top of the $285 a day that is needed to keep the doors open. Thanks to Sonya for blessing us with her testimony and challenge to get involved and thanks to everyone who attended and is now blessing the DOCK Ministry through the many donations received (so far about $13,080 has been raised), your prayers and by volunteering. Thanks to those in the background who made this night happen, Wayne for putting together the great slide show and bringing in the great special music and to the Fundraising Committee members for the tireless hours put into organizing the event.

Latest from Christy’s Corner

Beginning in January, three other mentors and I began meeting weekly with anywhere from four to ten girls for Breakthrough, our mentoring program where we meet with a smaller group of students to discuss God, the Bible, and just experience life together.  Due to availability, I was unable to find male mentors, so I was a little unsure of what was going to happen, but excited to spend time getting to know the girls better.  As I was thinking about the topics we should talk about, it became clear that a lot of these kids do not know the basic Bible stories.  From the first day we met, it was obvious there was a range of knowledge, but each has an eager curiosity to learn what the Bible has to do with their lives.  The first day we met questions arose from relationships to the Trinity to who goes to heaven.  With these questions it is clear that these girls are struggling with questions that everyone struggles with and it is my hope and prayer that they will see God working in their lives and turn to him for the answers.

A Day at The Dock

The Dock is currently open from 3 to 5 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday with Breakthrough meeting on Wednesday afternoons.  We follow Kelloggsville Community School’s Schedule.  A typical day begins when the kids sign-in at the front desk.  They are invited to play board games, crafts, homework, pool, ping-pong, or just to share their day with an adult who cares about them.  At 4pm, all physical activity stops and everybody gathers around to listen to the Gospel and why it is important in their life, today.  Afterwards, they receive a snack provided by volunteers and they hang out until 5 pm.  Students are allowed to sign out for the day at anytime.

Volunteers are the Backbone….

Volunteers from all Christian Faiths are welcome to share two hours a week building relationships with kids who are often hungry for healthy adult interaction.  This is done through playing board games, playing pool, ping pong, doing a craft, playing basketball or just sitting with a student to listen to his or her day.  Changing the lives of the student, the volunteer and the community.

Breakthrough

Breakthrough is a mentoring program currently held on Wednesday afternoons.  It is led by Christy Bosma, Community Youth Director, with the help of volunteers.  This is a smaller setting where the Bible is studied in depth and students have the opportunity to ask questions about Christ, the Bible, and the Christian Life in a safe environment.

God’s Protecting Hand

As Alexia came up to the front of the room she was nervous, but the excitement of what she was going to say was the power to overcome her fears.  Not many students will stand up in front of 70 of their classmates to share something personal, but Alexia was driven by a deep conviction that would not let her go.  You see, it was almost a week and a half earlier, on a Friday morning that the event occurred.  Alexia and her sister were riding with Grandma out to do some shopping.  School had been canceled that day because of snow and there were taking advantage  of the free time.  As Grandma was turning on to the highway, the girls were talking about all of the fun things they were going to do while shopping.
All of a sudden, Grandma hit some black ice and the car swerved out of control.  As Grandma attempted to gain control, the car seemed to pick up momentum, propelling them straight at a semi, which loomed in front of them. With nothing more that could be done, Alexia, her sister and grandma put their heads down and waited for impact.  The car hit the middle of the semi, tearing the roof off and stopping on the other side of the truck.
After they regained their senses, they got out of the car to look at the damage.  Grandma waved a passersby to call authorities.  Amazingly, the only injuries was the broken sternum that Grandma got, Alexia’s bruised back and her sister’s sore arm.
One emergency medical attendant was heard saying while surveying the accident, “These three should not be alive.  With the amount of damage to the car, the windshield should have cut their heads off.”  Alexia was driven to speak to The Dock friends because she knows that God saved her life and that was something worth moving an eleven year old girl to talk about!

Wanted: Women with a Heart for Young Moms

If you have a heart for young moms (13 to 20 years old) but not sure how to minister to them, YoungLives, part of Young Life, needs you.  YoungLives is about loving teen moms in the midst of the circumstances they are in – no matter what they are.  YoungLives needs women who will carry out Jesus’ promise of hope and healing.  They are looking for mentors who will embrace these moms with the unconditional love of Christ, while helping them discover hope and a future rooted in a solid relationship with Him.

If you, or somebody you know, would like to know about becoming a mentor, there is an information meeting at The Dock Ministries – 4996 South Division, Wyoming – on Monday March 19, 2012 at 7PM.  Amy deJong, Director of the Grand Rapids chapter of YoungLives, will be here to describe the program and to answer questions.  If you are interested and unable to attend or you know of a young mom who needs a mentor, you may contact Amy at amy.dejong@gmail.com or check out their website at gryounglives.younglife.org.
